In the early afternoon, she reached the end of the lake. A wide path led to a beach-side village with one main street. Along the street were shops selling toys, books, and/or beach clothes (in bathing suit and dress-filled windows advertising end of summer sales). Outside -- arrayed beside cafe front doors -- were round tables and summer chairs. Under umbrellas, people were drinking iced coffee, beer, or wine in translucent glasses.

At the place where a road led to the top of the hill (her destination the following morning) was a large red barn with bins of vegetables guarding the front door and a sign that said "Wine, Cheese, Sandwiches".

Sandwiches!
